Recent work : rodents, bristletails, bird proofing

Fitting a rodent guard to a black plastic gutter.

We’ve certainly hit the ground running in 2024 and our pest technicians have been hard at work tackling various infestations. We’ve dealt with everything from bristletails to rats, as well as providing bird proofing solutions.

Find out what we’ve been up to and do get in touch if we can help with any pest issues or worries you have.

Eco-friendly heat treatment for bedbugs, fleas and other crawling insects

Our new eco-friendly heat treatment was demonstrated by Connor recently who used it on the doggy beds and office chair at Eradipest HQ.  This is an exciting, ground-breaking solution which not only wipes out bugs but also includes a safe cleaning solution to eliminate eggs and fecal streaks.

It’s great for bedbugs but also for fleas, dust mites and other crawling insects.  It’s a dry steamer which uses minimal water, and is chemical-free, which means customers can re-enter rooms immediately after treatment.

As well as in domestic homes it’s also great in nursing homes, for chairs and beds with minimal interruption and no risk to residents or staff.

Here’s a link to our Instagram post where you can see Connor in action!

Sealing up rodent ingress points

Luke recently attended a property in Chichester which had a rodent infestation. He surveyed the property and found a few places where rats could access the interior, including these air bricks. It’s surprising how small a gap is required for rodents to get inside.

Here are before-and-after pictures of the property in question.

Luke sealed the ingress points with mesh covers which are an extremely effective pest-proofing solution.  We have many different pest prevention methods which we can employ, depending on the situation.

Birdproofing in Bognor

We carried out bird proofing work at a property in Aldwick where we supplied and fitted stainless steel mesh panels over six side chimney vents.

As you can see from the before-and-after photos, birds had been able to access the vent and build a nest previously, but our mesh guards will prevent bird ingress to the property in future.

Bristletails in Winchester

Have you heard of Bristletails?  They’re very similar to silverfish but slightly larger, with some species reaching up to 2cm in length.  And if you’ve never seen a silverfish then they’re wingless six-legged insects and they can much on books, wallpaper and cereals if they find them around the home.

So they are harmless, but also a nuisance, and love damp conditions so to get rid of them it’s important to reduce the humidity.

At this property in Winchester we sealed any gaps and carried out an insecticide treatment to successfully treat their bristletail infestation.

Loft clearance in Waterlooville

This job was a loft clearance in Waterlooville, attended by Chris and Luke.  It was a refurbished house and the property owner had found rodent droppings in the loft and was concerned there was a rat problem there.

When we first surveyed the property we found rat corpses in the insulation as well as evidence of live rodents so proposed a three-visit rodent treatment plan to eradicate them.

Here’s how the loft looked before we carried out our work :

View of a loft with insulation which contained rat droppings and corpses.

Once the treatment was concluded we implemented a full clearance of all loft insulation to remove all the dead rats and other materials.

A loft which has been cleared of all insulation and rodents.

We left the site tidy and clear of all debris, and the customer was happy that they could now move in to a rodent-free house.

Cluster flies in Chichester

Here’s a photo of some cluster flies which Connor treated successfully at a property in Chichester. Cluster flies migrate indoors when it starts to get cold in autumn, and these ones had gathered on a windowsill to hibernate.

Cluster flies create a noticeable amount of fecal mess which can stain walls, paintwork and belongings. They pose a health and safety risk if present in commercial properties such as pubs or cafes.

Rodent proofing in Fishbourne and Selsey

It’s a busy time of year for rodent proofing as rats, mice and squirrels are seeking shelter and food, so will use any means necessary to access our properties.

For this job, customers had reported hearing noises in the loft and weren’t sure what was causing them.  We carried out a survey and Luke identified three air brick vents which were broken, creating access points for the rodents to enter the property.

We usually recommend a three-visit treatment plan alongside proofing works to eradicate the issue.

And here’s another rodent proofing job, this time at a flat in Selsey attended by Kieran who implemented the three-visit treatment plan and then sealed all ingress points to prevent further activity.

Gutter clearing and rodent guards

Another service we can provide is gutter clearance and installation of rodent guards to prevent rats and mice climbing up and into your loft.

It’s crucial to keep gutters clear of leaves and debris for several reasons. Clogged gutters can cause water damage to walls and foundations. They are also a haven for pests like rodents, birds and insects, and good maintenance will extend their lifespan, preventing sagging and rust.

Our gutter guards allow water to flow whilst preventing access for rodents, making them an extremely simple but effective pest-proofing solution.
